Context

Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the world’s leading humanitarian organizations. The IRC provides relief, rehabilitation, and post-conflict reconstruction assistance to victims of oppression and violent conflict. Operating in more than 40 countries, the IRC’s mission is to help people whose lives and livelihoods have been shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and take control of their future.

In response to a growing humanitarian crisis, the IRC runs emergency programs in the Far North, Southwest, and Northwest regions of Cameroon, with a coordination office based in Yaoundé. Planned programs include environmental health, food security, education, and the protection and empowerment of women.

Service area

Part-time drivers will be based in Bamenda, Mamfe or Kumba, and will occasionally travel to the program’s service areas

Responsabilities

Reporting directly to the Admin and Logistics Officer, part-time drivers will be responsible for:

  • Courteously transporting IRC employees to destinations previously approved by their direct supervisor;
  • Communicating regularly during working hours and keeping their cell phone charged at all times so they can always be reached;
  • Adhere to the destinations and schedules of trips as approved by their supervisor; inform their supervisor of any delays that may prevent them from meeting the return time and route indicated on the trip sheet;
  • Take departing passengers to the airport and go to the airport to pick up arriving passengers at the designated locations and times;
  • Regularly check the trip log to ensure that no employee(s) on a business trip is/are missed when dropping off or picking up;
  • Comply with and ensure compliance with IRC vehicle usage rules at all times and in all locations (filling out the logbook, wearing seatbelts, no alcohol, no drugs, no unauthorized persons or materials on board);
  • Ensure regular vehicle maintenance and notify the supervisor of any breakdowns or suspected breakdowns;
  • Check fuel and lubricant levels to avoid running out of fuel, and fill out and sign the fuel log at each refueling;
  • Ensure that all equipment and tools are on board the vehicle and that spare parts are available;
  • Ensure that all administrative documents related to the vehicle’s registration are up to date; notify the supervisor at least three weeks in advance if any of these documents are about to expire;
  • Drive and park the vehicle safely; avoid taking roads that are unsafe from a safety perspective;
  • Maintain the vehicle’s interior and exterior by washing it regularly;
  • Assist mechanics during vehicle maintenance or repairs;
  • Ensure that the first-aid kit is present in the vehicle and up to date;
  • Perform any other additional tasks required by the supervisor.

Monitoring

  • Write daily field reports (written feedback from the field)
  • Ensure that all financial documents (advance reimbursement/security fund) are completed and submitted accurately, as required by IRC policies.

General

  • Commits to adhering to the IRC Way (IRC Code of Ethics).
  • Commits to ensuring the optimal implementation of these Policies within their work environment.
  • Is available to perform any other ad hoc tasks deemed necessary by their direct supervisor or by the IRC.

Other duties

  • Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with the IRC’s operational policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Required Profile: Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

Experience

  • Experience driving off-road vehicles
  • Experience working with an international humanitarian NGO is a plus
  • Experience working with IRC is a plus

Skills

  • Fluent in French or English
  • Must hold a Class B driver’s license; a Class D/C license is a plus.
  • Must hold at least a CEPE

Qualifications

  • Good interpersonal skills and strong negotiation abilities; a team player; flexible; able to handle stress; discretion. Technical resourcefulness
  • Willingness to travel frequently outside of Bamenda, Mamfe or Kumba
